A completely Automated Storage and Retrieval System has been installed at two locations of RBI -- Mysore & Salboni.
Choice of AS/RS as most preferred solution
The material to be stored is watermarked paper, which comes in wooden boxes from containers. This is a high security material, as this paper goes into manufacturing of currency.
The solution to be designed for storage and retrieval of these boxes was required to satisfy the following key parameters:
- Minimum handling by human contact due to high risk in security
- Maximum storage in as small a footprint area as possible for better control
- High throughput at input stage to unload containers in minimum time. This is due to high security risk outside the storage area during unloading.
- Real-time data management of inventory was extremely critical due to variety in denominations and for error-free operation.
Brief description of the solution
The AS/RS installed at Mysore and Salboni has the capacity to store 12495 pallet locations each. The system is 100 mtrs long, 27 mtrs wide, and utilises complete stores height of almost 12 mtrs.
The storage is of double-deep type (one pallet behind the other). This ensures extremely dense storage without compromising on accessibility. The boxes from containers are unloaded on accumulation conveyors. The accumulation conveyors facilitate continuous loading of pallets and therefore containers can be emptied rapidly. The boxes are bar coded and pass through profile check before being stored in the system.
All material handling equipment such as Stacker Cranes and Conveyors are perfectly synchronised. This control is effected by adequate hardware and software back-up including Warehouse Management System.
